Hi! I've just rigged my own cd audio cable. To my dismay, I could not
find the proper plug that will fit my NEC CD-ROM drive. So I just wrap the wire
onto the pins. The cable works, but I find the volume output is a bit low
comparing to the line out GUS Volume (The .wavs in Windows sounds really loud
when red book audio sounds normal.) I wonder if it is because of my cable, or
its supposed to be that way. In yesterday's digest, I`ve notice that the 16-bit
daughter card comes with a new Windows mixer that can adjust CD volume as well,
I wonder will it be available for us who don't have the 16-bit daughter card?
BTW I use Ultrinit 2.18 with -o -l -m128 (and the cable cost me 3 bucks altogether 8->

I appreciate the fact that people look forward to getting
their digests everyday. However, there are now ~1800 people on the
list. I can't respond to things like this. That's why we have the
ftp site that holds all of the digests. Please folks, look there
first. Thanks!

Subject: Gravis Ultrasound Bad Press. (Posted to PC Review Magazine)
Dear Sir,
After reading your review of PC soundcards, I was dismayed to see that the
Advanced Gravis Ultrasound was given such a poor rating. The results of
your review contradicted those of my own experience.
The GUS was criticized for having no games support. Actualy there are
more games released in the last 6 months that use the GUS fully than
those that used all of the SB-16's advanced features. Those games that
do support the GUS tend to put Sound Blaster emulator cards to shame.
Gravis was also criticised for providing poor soundblaster emulation.
The article was misleading in that it implied that a GUS owner would
want to use soundblaster emulation most of the time. This is certainly
not true. I chose a GUS because I wanted the best possible sound. It
would be such a waste to use something as capable as the Ultrasound as
just another Sound Blaster emulator. It can be argued that this is the
Ultrasound's strength - despite the Soundblaster 16's good features, in
games it will allways be used a Soundblaster Pro. When the gravis is
supported it normaly is used more fully.
Most of the time, where a game has native GUS support your magazine
failes to acknowlege this fact. For example, in the review of Doom the
check-box at the end only lists Adlib and SoundBlaster support. Any
die-hard Doom fan knows that the only way to play it is with an
Ultrasound.Compared with a sound blaster emulator card, The sound is
clearer, the sterio effects are more realistic and the music is
definitely better.
All I ask of your magazine is that when a game supports the Ultrasound,
please mention it in your check-box, and next time your magazine reviews
soundcards, please take a little bit more time to appreciate the
Ultrasounds exceptional features.

Wait, I have Dell P5/60, and I have no problem with running SBOS in my system.
I have used SBOS with Falcon3 and some other games with no problem at all.

Subject: GUS + SB + StarControl 2 = :( Any fixes?
I am having trouble getting StarContol 2 to run with my current
configuration (GUS + SoundBlaster). The damn game tries to auto-
detect my soundcard and immediately locks up, even if I use the
command line overide to force the game to use GUS sound. The
docs mention this being a problem and supplying no other solution
except removing one of the cards.
Has anyone devised an alternative fix for this?

StarCon2 has problems with the extra memory on GUSses with over 256K of RAM.
Simply type ultrinit -z before running the game. This zeroes out all GUS RAM,
in fact solving the problem.

Or did you mean the *other* submit directory? ;-)
Really, just take gus0038 and stuff gus0040 on top of it. I was having
tons of problems, and gus0040 fixed them all. Now all my stuff works
again. Windows doesn't kick me out the first time--ultrainit properly
initializes my gus (apparently v. 2.4?) at boot-up, apparently that was
why windows dropped me out to dos, but somehow the gus got initialized
then, because it worked the second time.

Surround Sound and "3D" sound have different goals. 3D sound attempts
to make sound sounds appear to originate at locations other than where
the speakers are located. Surround Sound just relies on additional
speakers. Complete surround sound would require speakers arranged in a
sphere around the listener. 3D sound tries to achieve the same effect
but without all those speakers.

You have to use a 16-bit DMA channel, and, if you have a 1 MB GUS,
clear GUS memory before playing the game.

This is not practicle since ultra tracker files can have up to 32
channels and mods are either 4, 6, or 8. So if you have an .ULT file
with 16 channels, and you convert it to an 8 channel .MOD, you'd be
missing half the song/instruments. maybe if the .ULT was only a 4, 6 or
8 channel one, you could do this, but i haven't seen too many .ULT with
that few channels since the idea is to use as many as you need for the
music...

Subject: GUS vs. the world
I've been seeing a lot of ranting and raving on this newsletter for quite
some time now about how wonderous the GUS is and how everything else sucks
compared to it, etc., etc. Yes, I admit, it is a good sounding card.
Yes, it does have many very nice features. And yes, it is easy to use from
a programming standpoint.
HOWEVER,
None of you seem to realize that when a magazine evaluates a card's "worth"
to the market, they also analyze things like ease of installation and
maintenance, average number of games which support it, and future support and
development.
I have owned my GUS for a few months now, having upgraded from the original,
vanilla SB, a card which was unerringly reliable, supported, and sounded
pretty damned good for its pricerange. Yes, I was impressed with the GUS's
sound, but I quickly found myself having to go through bizarre gyrations
to get even the tiniest game to work with it. If I wasn't having to use
the fairly poor SBOS emulation which makes games which I once thought had
interesting music now sound disgusting and worse-than-Adlibish, I was
replacing drivers in the game, trying experimental configurations for
emulation routines in memory, and generally executing contortions usually
associated only with something as awkward as Autocad.
Now think of if I were not such an experienced computer user. Let's say I just
wanted to play games. Do you think I would really want to spend an hour
each time I get a new game trying to figure out IF my sound card can work,
if so in what mode, and even then how to get it there? With my rather
educated past in computers, I still find it highly frustrating having to
guess at how to get a game to work with this mammoth brown card.
True, if the world were peachy and we had just as much press and good cheer
as the SoundBlaster (which will not happen due to our pricerange), then
all games would support us and we could all smile smugly at the "lesser"
hardwares. But we can't, because we're not hardly supported at all,
and emulators just don't cut it with the memory-hogging, highly idiosynchronic
world of computer games (not to mention the utter failure at SBOS emulation
of anything approaching true SoundBlaster sound).
So my reply to all of you who are "amazed" at how little press the GUS gets
and how you are sure that the entire computing industry is run exclusively
through bribes is to look at exactly what it TAKES to get this great sound.
A large portion of computer owners don't have the skills to keep this card
running. Most computer owners don't know what the Internet or a BBS IS, let
alone want to spend long-distance charges downloading new drivers for
each game they buy.
I sincerely hope that Gravis finds a way to get much more support than they
have. Obviously... I blew a good wad of cash securing this little piece of
hardware (after, I might add, a Pro Audio Spectrum 16 failed to work with
my machine). And yes, it is a good-sounding card. But please don't be so
confused when magazines fail to recommend it to the general consumer quite yet.
I know that I would be lying if I did myself.

Also, whats the price tag on it?
If I do get one, I'll probably sell my GUS w/1meg for a decent price, or

I am at my wits end! I cannot get Oxyd Magnum to work with the
SBOS (latest version from GUS0039 nor version 1.20) TSR. I have
tried all of the options, and the X options, all to no avail. On
the options I can get to work (sort of), one of two things happens.
1. I get soundblaster sounds, but the screen draws up so slow that
I can just about see every pixel drawn. Takes roughly 10 minutes
to draw the screen...
2. The screens are drawn up okay, but I don't get sound, and when
I hit something that would normally produce a sound, the game
halts for about 3/4 seconds.
Has anyone gotten this game to work with SBOS?
I sure hope this post worked okay, this is my first time...

I got the new playmidi from the gus0040.zip archive. The drum patches
now sound better. But there still is a thing that doesn't sound right
compared to the 2.06 playmidi and the windows midi drivers.
Sometimes the sound gets louder suddenly. For instance if you listen
very carefully to the beethovens 5th that was shipped with your GUS you
will hear the applause suddenly growing louder, what it didn't do
in the old playmidi. It also does a similar thing with the Eve of the
war midi file, at the end of the violin(?) intro.
Another thing I don't like with the new playmidi is that when you press
ESC to break the song the sound doesn't end right away but the patches
are played a bit longer, and that kind of annoys me ...

Some kind souls replied to my plea for help several days ago--thank you.
I still don't have the latest version of SBOS working with FS 5.0, though.
The common thread for those that do have it working seems to be use of
MS DOS 5.0. In addition, I recall posts about the targetting pause not
being present with X-Wing and Megaem when EMM386.EXE from MS DOS 5.0 or
Windows 3.1 was used. Also, one person wrote me he had success with the
latest version of SBOS and FS 5.0, but did not use extended memory. I do
not recall which version of DOS he used.
So, Gravis (or anyone else), is there a problem with MS DOS 6.x and your

extended memory through EMM386.EXE and not tell anyone?

Subject: T7G and GUS
Hello!
I tried downloading the T7G fixes from archive.orst but I still cannot get
t7g to recognize nor work with the GUS. Can anyone give me some
suggestions? I have had this card for 3 days and also justgot the updates
(0038 etc...) and am not quite sure about what I am doing.
TIA.

Luky for You Phat, you don't seem to have many problems with your GUS.
Neither did I until I installed gus0038. The ultrinit v2.16 would not
initialise my GUS properly so I have to run GUSMOD to get anything to work.
Now I had hoped that v2.18 (a bug *fix*), from GUS0040, would fix this.
NOOOOO It does not! I have a v2.4 rev card.
Megaem does not work either. It reports Honky.pat not found. I know this
is a FAQ but not a difficult problem to solve surely?
I may be tempted to reinstall my 2.54 disk set. and "Go back to basics"
but it is arse ache.
On the subject of GUS reviews in games mags etc. Yes do write to them and
give them grief. But also remember to write to games publishers. They
hold the Key to this situation. Once there is sufficient native support
(not AIL) all these mags will see how good the card is and be forced to
eat their words.

Subject: Ultramid
What exactly is Ultramid and what does it do?
I have looked through my directories and only found it in a Gus
supporting demo. Does this mean that it came with the demo software?
The version I have is 1.02, the latest is 1.08, is it worth updating?
or will updated versions arrive with the software that uses it?
Any help appreciated,

Subject: Weird music in SC2000 with AIL32
Okay, so I got the new 32bit driver (AIL3213 I believe) and installed
and run SC2000. So, it runs fine, sometimes. The problem is that,
sometimes, the music is not play properly. I know what it is suppose
to sound like by using SBOS, and when I use the AIL32 driver it
doesn't sound right sometimes. When it "screws" up, SC2000 will sort
of play throught its patches. I get a random mixture of "applaus",
"birthday party whsiles", and some random music. Am I the only one
having that problem? Any solution? (I have it set on general midi
and sound blaster for sound FX).
I have tried using GUSCLEAR, load the patches, then run the game, but
I still get this weird music. Also it screws up almost everytime if I
play the time for over an hour.
HELP!!!!

Subject: {GUS}: Static recorded on one channel only
Newsgroups: comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcard
Recently I heard some disturbing noises when trying to
record on my GUS (connected a CD and used GoldWave to
record). To test it out, I disconnected all inputs
from the GUS and started to record, at 8 bit/44.1 Khz
STEREO.
The result was quite disturbing: there is constant static noise
on one stereo channel only. The other channel is silent (well,
as silent as the regular hiss). The phenomenon is totally
consistent. I made sure nothing is connected to the input lines.
Is my GUS broken? Is there something I can do to correct this
problem? (It's a new card - still on warranty). H/W version is 2.4.
---
I noted the same noise when sampling, either from MIC IN or from LINE IN.
At first I though it was something to do with interference from other
boards on my system, but as you find the same noise, now I'm curious to
know what may be causing it.
Can anybody give me a clue ?
